Everyone has always known that children require high amounts of natural, healthy fats. Healthy fats are a crucial building block for cells that literally build your child from an infant to an adult.
The problem: If you give children fake fats from processed foods, you poison their growing cells and bodies because their bodies use these fake fats as building blocks.
The solution: Avoid ALL cheap, fake fats.
The complication: It is hard to tell what fats are fake.
Today I will pick on olive oil because it is one of the most dangerous faked fats.
I have to thank one of our Italian parents for bringing this problem to my attention two decades ago. He told me to never buy olive oil because I didn’t understand the market and I would probably poison myself. This father runs one of Italy’s largest conglomerates! He then gave me a box of unlabeled olive oil from a lot that he had purchased for his own family.
Problems with olive oil:
It is almost impossible to get authentic, organic olive oil.
Lack of olive trees (use google maps to go over Italy and California)
Ongoing olive tree viruses due to pesticide overuse
High olive oil prices encourage fraud
Non-olive oils being used in “olive” oil
Cancer-causing solvents (e.g., hexane) used to extract oil from olives.
Many people have died from contaminated olive oil, so it is not a matter of only long-term cancers or eating better, it is about avoiding toxins deliberately put into the bottle and sold to you.
Extra Virginity by Tom Mueller provides an easy and enjoyable explanation of the olive oil problems,
So, you have to add the concept of adulteration due to fraud and manufacturing processes to your shopping decisions. Yes, I do feel your pain. The upside of it all is that your family will become healthier and stay healthy. As my husband and I get older, we see our friends literally dropping around us due to all kinds of diseases that were unheard of in the 1970s. And it’s not a matter of diagnostics, people were pretty lean and healthy.
Healthy fats:
Buy the highest quality meat you can afford and use the fat that comes off for cooking. The animals must be organic and pastured.
Everyone kept the fat from cooking bacon in a crock at the back of the stove to use for cooking. You don’t have to guess about paleolithic people’s diets. We did the bacon grease thing in the 1970s. Most people stopped when the government pushed the “low fat” diet ads at this time.
High-heat and low-adulteration oils such as butter, ghee, coconut oil.
About ten years ago, I sat at an event where the head cardiologist at a famous hospital laughed about “stupid people (the American people), still believe fat makes you fat.” As he ate his steak and drank a whiskey.
Something to think about.
I used to work for a Sicilian boss. He had specific olive oils that he bought, since he knew that most of the olive oil was adulterated. This was a long time ago. Mercy has earlier posts mentioning olive oil issues from over 100 years ago.
It's great to see this view coming forward! We also subscribe to healthy fats at our house :)
