Music is a language that children must internalize naturally.
The main mistake music progams make is to teach theory and terminology before children have internalized music. In a musical family, children naturally learn to sing, dance, and move to rhythm. This leads to an early interest in playing the music that they have heard their whole lives because they have already internalized it.
I see teachers trying to teach rhythm and terminology to reluctant children. The reason this does not work is that the children have no idea what is going on, they have not internalized music through environmental exposure.
Imagine if you sat in a classroom where the teacher asked you to recite in German. And you had no German language fluency. You’d be lost, reluctant, and seek to escape the room as soon as possible.
If you have no music background, this is a good time to use music and videos. One can download online videos, so that children are not online.
We provide three categories of music exposure: 1) Listening to a wide array of music, including classical music and instrumental pieces. 2) Simple two to five note songs that introduce children to basic music. 3) Instruments such as the xylophone in class/home, or the Suzuki method with a violin or small keyboard. Of course, when children express an interest in particular music, we make sure to include it.
It is important that the instrument fit the child’s size. If you select Suzuki, make sure you have the temperment for it at this time. If you are stressed now, it is a bad method because it relies on the parent to demonstrate each piece.
