Tamara Rubin has released new test results for food and household items. While the media often portrays heavy metals as a “Made in China” issue, it's important to recognize that this problem actually dates back to England several centuries ago.
I wish I had taken pictures of my great grandmother’s China sets before I tossed them. They tested off the charts for lead and cadmium.
Now I shop very carefully. No crystal wine glasses, no Sur La Table, no Tiffany crystal, no La Creuset, no glass baby bottles with lettering on the exterior, no stainless steel baby bottles …
I thought my lovely (and expensive) Staub were safe, then I saw the testing on Mamavation. No lead, but plenty of PFAS on the interior. Tellingly, when I made bone broth in the Staub, I found that I didn’t want to drink it. And I love bone broth.
So now I use stainless steel and cast iron. Here’s a good YouTube short on making stainless steel not stick.
And food,
All testing for heavy metals is conducted with an X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer, so the results are precise and reliable.
For a while, Tamara Rubin’s site was hard to find online with certain browsers; it seemed to have mysteriously “disappeared.” Frustrating, right? That’s one reason I switched to Firefox Private Browsing.
When I made the switch, a beautiful kitchen sink I had been eyeing suddenly appeared on a site that hadn't shown up before—priced $250 less than those I had found previously.
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention: I kept a 200-year-old crystal cream and sugar set from my great-grandmother’s collection. I don’t use it for food, but I wanted to preserve a piece of family history.
In June, I used the crystal set as vases for two roses from my garden.
The roses were dead by morning.
Hmm, this ended up being a grim post.
Before I sign off, I want to share something fun. How about cats?
Bon courage, my friends!!
Oh no heavy metal on glass baby bottles ! I have one that is glass with writing on the outside . Iv rarely used it but I had no idea . He I bought the glass one thinking it would be better then the plastic ones . 🤦♀️
