This is traditionally the most popular poem in the Children’s House for children from three to six years of age, but we also use it for the toddler classes. We use the original spelling of “tyger” to keep it as authentic as possible, plus it is a good introduction to the origin of English words.

Dr. Montessori advocated reading aloud to children as they worked with art projects, so that they could listen as they used their hands. Of course, children also like to cluster around and look at the poems we read. We leave it up to the children.
This is great read aloud. What the hammer? What the chain? The meter is strong. Poetry like this echoes throughout life. The phrases get re-used and repeated since you can call a whole story with a well known phrase. You can see a world in a grain of sand.
