A reading of a modern children’s book based on a poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861).
Both the writing and illustrations are nice. Lately, there are too many books, even award-winning ones, that ignore writing to focus on illustrations.
Watch out for children’s books that contain inaccuracies. For example, I saw a book that was wonderfully illustrated and received rave reviews on Amazon, despite the many factual errors in the book.
YouTube is not good for children because it hijacks their attention span at a time when they need to develop both their brains and bodies, but it is a fine platform for taking a look at books before buying.
Gutenberg.org has many fine children’s books from the days when children’s book writers were held to higher standards. You can print them for free and let your children illustrate them.
I love the idea of having the children make their own books. So much of modern life is passive (the internet), having them make things is great. And they are exposed to great writing from an early age, without the "this is great you are required to read it" work they often get in school when they are older. I think this might subconsciously improve their language skills and their ability to communicate (they are communicating with the drawing) that they will use when they are older.
