I love the idea of having the children make their own books. So much of modern life is passive (the internet), having them make things is great. And they are exposed to great writing from an early age, without the "this is great you are required to read it" work they often get in school when they are older. I think this might subconsciously improve their language skills and their ability to communicate (they are communicating with the drawing) that they will use when they are older.
