The prepared Montessori environment allows infants to follow their natural instincts to move their bodies in a natural way.
It is a myth to believe we can “teach” an infant how to move. A damaging myth. As I see clunky adults trying to drag infants around in “therapy” or “developmental” exercises, I always cringe because it damages the child more than adults understand.
Notice how the child in the video is barefoot? The clothes are not impeding her movement at all. The surfaces she walks on are solid and not slippery.
Having parents observe children in a prepared Montessori environment is a valuable thing to do for parent’s day at schools and day care centers. You can use pages from the Montessori Journal to let them make observations of their experiences.
Free your infant. Stand back and observe.
